5 Things I’m Looking Forward To This Christmas Day

I’m watching Elf while I write this. Well I started to write this, then I ended up just watching Elf. So now I’m writing this with Elf quotes and Christmas music in my head.

If only I could craft as quickly as Buddy!

I do love a Christmas film, even the cheesy ones sometimes. This festive season I’ve discovered one Christmas film about a psychic magical advent calendar, another about an alternate world within a snowglobe, both equally predictable and brilliantly rubbish.

As you know my favourite part of the festive season is the run up, I enjoy the prep and suspense of Christmas Day nearing. So basically that means the best is nearly done.

There are however some things I’m looking forward to this Christmas Day, and here are 5 of them…

CHRISTMAS AT MY SISTERS

This Christmas Day is going to be quite a different one for me, location wise. This will be my first Christmas Day in as long as I can remember, celebrating away from the family home (although I’ve spent my fair share of Christmases in hospital over the years, that doesn’t count as ‘celebrating’). I’ll be getting up early tomorrow so me and the mother can head to my sisters house, just under an hour away, to join them in time to watch my nieces open their gifts.

You may think it makes much more sense to head there the night before and wake up all fresh Christmas morning. It would for some. Just getting into another house can be quite an achievement for myself and the wheels, with access not being considered until fairly recently when building a house, and it still not being considered effectively. Would I get in your house? Do you have a wide door? Step free access? Open plan living or narrow corridors and sharp turns? No, I probably can’t get in your house. As much as I’d like to join you for a brew.

Anyway, I digress. Staying at another’s house is even more of a palaver, so I’m going to visit my sister for the Christmas Day. Gift giving, the first time she’s cooked Christmas dinner, playing with the nieces, wine, hopefully wine, maybe even a mince pie. In somebody else’s house. That’s quite cool.

GIFT GIVING

We all love receiving gifts, the excitement of giving them a squish, a shake, guessing what’s inside. Opening carefully or ripping the paper off like a crazed child. Well actually a crazed child probably will be tearing the paper off my gifts, as it’s not one of my talents. Present opening. I’d be there all day just trying to peel back an edge. So luckily I have nieces, and those nieces are keen to assist when gifts are involved!

Even better than that though is the giving of a gift. Looking for that something special or fun that reminds you of a certain person. Hoping a friend will be pleased with their surprise, the suspense of knowing what they think. I’d give a gift over receiving one almost every time. Almost. There are tricky gift receivers too.

CHEESE

One of the best things about Christmas week is the cheese. Not that many days of the year go by without me eating cheese (since lent 2016 anyway), but any excuse to eat more of it is fine by me. When else is it acceptable to have seven different varieties of cheese on your plate all at the same time?!

FESTIVE TELEVISION

Although I don’t watch too much telly on Christmas Day, I do record or catch up on a lot later.

As discussed above I love a Christmas film. I also love a Christmas special. Be it a comedy series, Downton Abbey, The Royale Family, a quiz show, a bloopers, The Great British Bake Off. I love them all, and will be watching them.

BUCKS FIZZ

The retro drink, not the retro band. There is only one time of year that I have a glass or two of Bucks Fizz and that’s Christmas Day morning. There’s also only one time of year I drink alcohol in the morning and that’s Christmas Day.

‘The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.’

What are your Christmas Day highlights?

  1. Oh no, I’m sorry I missed this post before! I hope you had a lovely Christmas, Gemma. Did you eat your body weight in cheese? I think I’ve eaten twice mine in Pringles… the saying about ‘once you pop you can’t stop’ seems to be true! 🙂

    1. I think I’m still eating my body weight in cheese! Ooh pringles, that saying is definitely true. Haven’t even opened mine yet though!
Hope you had a lovely Christmas and are feeling better?

  2. Hope you had a lovely Christmas and I totally agree about the cheese! We’ll be eating it for days to come because I bought a load at the Christmas market and then forgot to take the cheese board off my online shopping order – ah well! We’ll just have to eat lots of cheese!

    1. It’s great that newer houses are built with access in mind a bit more. If I’m ever in the area I know where to come for a cuppa!

There wasn’t as much festive tv on as I would have hoped this year, but I did enjoy some comedy specials and The Big Fat Quiz.

  3. I learnt Christmas Eve of the world inside the snowglobe… I think it is The Grinch – Whoville. I watched it while ironing school uniforms and the kids were scared of the Grinch. I love that film, Jim Carey was fantastic. So my best thing is the kids opening their presents, their excitement and their laughter. They go mad under the tree – opening everything in sight and they are hard to control. Sounds like you have had a lovely Christmas! Merry Christmas to you and your family. x
